National Doughnut Day 2019: Freebies Around Miami

MIAMI, FL — If you looked at mankind's historic first pictures of a black hole earlier this year and immediately thought "glazed doughnut," Friday is going to be a stellar day. National Doughnut Day is once again upon us and there will be plenty of fried goodness orbiting our universe.

Local shops, chains and even some restaurants in the Miami area will be offering delicious deals all day long.

National Doughnut Day dates back to 1938, when The Salvation Army of Chicago created it to honor the "Doughnut Girls" who served doughnuts to soldiers in World War I. The unofficial holiday is celebrated every year on the first Friday in June.

Though the honorary salute to the "Doughnut Girls" wouldn't begin until years later, two Salvation Army volunteers — Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance — came up with the idea of frying doughnuts in soldiers' helmets after they and about 250 others were deployed to France to provide spiritual and emotional support for U.S. soldiers.

In Miami Beach, Happy Place Donuts will open its second location on iconic Ocean Drive between 11 and 12 Streets.

To celebrate, the establishment will be giving away free doughnuts to the first 100 customers, not only at the new store but also at the original location on Española Way.

Some of the treats available at both stores include rainbow donuts, s’more’s donuts and Love & Hip-Hop star, Mami Ana’s sweet empanadas, Empanadalicious. New to the Ocean Drive location are the Happy and Healthy breakfast and lunch menus.

Circle House Coffee & MOJO Donuts

In addition to delivering daily caffeine jolts with handcrafted coffee, Circle House Coffee will be serving up a BOGO deal in celebration of National Doughnut Day with a tempting selection of MOJO Donuts, the celebrated gourmet doughnut brand known for its over-the-top dunkers. Founded by retired NFL linebacker Stephen Tulloch, Circle House Coffee is the only location to permanently carry Mojo Donuts outside of its Pembroke Pines bakery. Circle House is located at 727 NE 3rd Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

Thai Donuts at Casa Sensei

Celebrate National Doughnut Day with Casa Sensei, a culturally immersive restaurant that combines Pan-Asian flavors with the dynamic culinary traditions of Latin America in the heart of Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale. Casa Sensei will be offering guests free Thai Donuts (value: $8) with the purchase of two entrees. Diners have the option of eating inside at the bar or on the patio overlooking the Himmarshee canal and the gondola tours. The eatery also offers complimentary cotton candy and kimchee popcorn with every meal. Casa Sensei is located at 1200 East Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale.

Krispy Kreme (participating locations)

Krispy Kreme wants you to help the chain give away one million free doughnuts on Friday. Visit one of the participating shops and choose your favorite doughnut.

"That’s it! No purchase necessary, limited one free doughnut per guest," the chain said on its website. "Tell all your friends and family and bring them with you to join the celebration."

The chain said if will offer a second doughnut giveaway later in June if people "help us give away one million doughnuts on National Doughnut Day."

The chain plans to give away a taste of its "newest creation" once it is unveiled later in June, promising the new confection will be “out of this world great."

Duck Donuts
